The scientists from the University of Michigan in the United States have found that becoming a dad reduces the libido, as the father feels almost as exhausted and frazzled by stress as the mother. In the case of men, this devastation is purely emotional.
First Sex after Pregnancy: Problems
The women, who have just become mothers, often have problems with the first sexual contact after pregnancy. It is well known, but few people suspect that the same problems occur in young fathers. The experts say that fathers are worried about the renewal of their sexual activity almost exactly the same way as mothers because they feel severe fatigue by the time of childbirth. Besides, they are nervous because of the emergence of a new member of the family.
When Does the First Post-Pregnancy Sex Life Begin?
Research shows that one in five young fathers does not have post-pregnancy sex for more than 3 months. Every third father makes love 6 weeks after his wife’s delivery, and about the same number of married men begin their intimate relations from about 7 to 12 weeks after the baby is born.
What Causes Lack of Sex after Pregnancy?
One of the main reasons why men are not in a hurry to have sex after their wife’s pregnancy is a not very good physical condition of the woman. However, the most important factor is the lack of time, as noted in the study, whose results were published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
Being a Dad Is Stressful
In total, the researchers studied the sexual behavior of 114 partners of young mothers during the first 3 months after childbirth. It turned out that fatherhood brings quite a lot of stress to men. Couples return to regular sexual activity later than it has always been assumed. By the way, this is one of the few studies that investigated the father’s mood after childbirth – all other studies are focused on the emotions of mothers.
