Samantha Harris had a good chance to rival her usually curvier Hollywood female friends – but it proved to be a short-lived success. As soon as she was through breastfeeding, her assets dwindled back to what she had before.

Is she worried with that?

Not a bit! Harris has other ideas about being busty – maybe because she has grown accustomed to not having big boobs. “I’m okay with that,” the Entertainment Tonight correspondent confessed to PEOPLE when cornered at The Beauty Book for Brain Cancer launch event on November 14 in Los Angeles. She admitted that she wouldn’t like to be famous just for her cleavage – although when she was pregnant, her breasts were very much in evidence.

But that was only a temporary growth, as she knows, since it happened this way when she was bearing her first daughter, Josselyn Sydney, 4 years ago. Now history repeated itself with her second, Hillary Madison, who turned 10 months.

When they are among themselves, most women agree that large breasts are a difficult thing to manage in everyday life, the 37-year-old says. So she is sure that the cleavage is played up for men’s sake more than not.

Recently she had to make fashion choices for her bras – and she didn’t like the experience. “You feel constricted” was her conclusion, you always had to mind them, especially during workouts.

But it’s now a thing of the past, and Harris is promoting a new trend for the red carpet – drool-adorned gowns.

It’s a design that goes back to her girls who would leave spit or other signs of their activity on her. Now it’s mostly drool, laughs the happy mother, because little Hillary Madison took to gnawing her shoulder!

Meanwhile her house often reverberates with the sounds of chase as her younger is trying to catch up with her elder sister – “Hillary just wants to be around her big sister Josselyn and go wherever she goes.” Harris says that this desire makes Hillary exercise a lot in her walk so she gets less wobbly at a faster rate than Josselyn did.

This is a great example of the second child syndrome at work, is the belief of Harris and her hubby Michael Hess. She remembers the time when they were doing everything they could for their first girl – now it’s so different with having to be torn between the two cuties!

When it came to giving birth to her first child, Evangeline Lilly knew what she wanted – and got it even if it meant eight hours of ongoing labor!

As the time was approaching – last May – the Real Steel star decided on a home birth. And even when the situation got a mite complicated, she stood her ground.

The whole story came out during Lilly’s interview on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Monday. The movie star told how she “actually skipped the hospital” wanting to have a home birth, never expecting that the natural way would stretch for 30 hours – including 8 hours of pushing!

That’s what goes for a great difference between men and women, Lilly muses; 8 hours of pushing means not a big deal to men but makes women gasp in horror! It was too much even for the midwife who came up with some advice after having watched five hours of labor.

When the actress’s midwife and birthing assistant approached her with their suggestions, the first thing Lilly felt was indignation… “I was like, ‘Really? After five hours of pushing you have a few suggestions? You couldn’t have told me five minutes in?’”

After her son was born, the 32-year-old first-time mother intended to go recluse in terms of career for a while, but that was just another wish that didn’t come out as had been hoped.

Her happy union with the son was broken into by Peter Jackson who called her with a proposal to play an elf in The Hobbit. Is it any wonder Lilly leaped at the suggestion? She agreed at once – and soon found herself “strapped in” to four shooting commitments.

But it was never regarded as a reason to stay off her son – the baby was brought to the shooting every day to be near his mom, although at times he didn’t feel it that way. The Hobbit’s cast member remembers the instant when she snatched out a moment to nurse the son and was surprised at his violent fit of screaming – until she realized that she wasn’t looking like his mother at all! She was all fairy-tale pointed-eary creature that looked right out of this world.

Later that evening when she was breastfeeding the baby at home and he was behaving normal, Lilly’s partner Norman Kali said to her that if he could talk he would want to recount to her a strange thing that had happened to him in the afternoon!

Whatever, Evangeline Lilly means to go on until she has a “brood” of children.

Nutritionists warn that one should not give cow milk to infants because it is too salty for them. Cow milk contains 4 times more salt than breast milk.

Attention, young mothers! It is better not to give cow milk to babies till the age of 12 months! In comparison, the content of salt in breast milk is 15 mg per 100 ml, while cow milk has 55 mg per 100 ml. If your infant drinks about 750 ml of cow milk a day, it will receive 385 mg of salt, and that is almost half the maximum daily salt intake recommended for the infants under one year.

Accordingly, the researchers advise to reduce the amount of salt in other foods for the infants that drink cow milk instead of breastfeeding.

In general, the nutritionists from Bristol University, who have discovered how salty cow milk formula is, claim that consuming too much salt can lead to health problems in children. A large amount of salt in the diet increases blood pressure and causes kidney disorders.

The scientists advise mothers to give their children breast milk or special mixtures, but not cow milk!

The idea of milk delivery for moms with babies was conceived by a breastfeeding mom Jill Miller. Though she may have overdone it a bit with her image of a huge nippled boob, the Milk Truck can make the lives of socially active mothers easier. There are too many places in the city where you can’t – or find it pretty uncomfortable for good reasons – feed the baby. Public spaces, shopping malls, restaurants, social events are out of bounds, but the baby doesn’t know it. Neither does it need to, if the Milk Truck catches on.

Miller is using the pledge site Kickstarter to raise the necessary funding of $10,000. Meanwhile Pittsburgh moms will be able to avail themselves of the helpful truck during the Andy Warhol Museum’s 2011 Pittsburgh Biennial (September 26 to December 10). The truck will be running for several hours, its location and route available online. It may be a usual sight at concerts and sporting events soon, furnishing comfy nursing space for those who prefer to take the baby along everywhere.

Not so long ago the New York gallery gave all the volunteering food experimenters an opportunity to try the unusual cheese made of women’s breast milk.

According to the author of this idea, Miriam Simun, the post-graduate student at the New York University, this product is a temporary trend because in future she plans to deal with the question of ethics of modern biotechnology, and the first step in this direction should be the revolutionary type of cheese produced by her.

As noted by Miriam Simun, the cheese made of women’s breast milk is a starting-point for an active discussion of this topic. From her point of view, some people like the product, and some of them find it disgusting. Mrs. Simun found three breastfeeding mothers who agreed to have their milk turned into cheese. She scanned the mammary glands of the women to diagnose possible diseases, and then the milk was subjected to pasteurization, and finally cheese was made of it.

3 kinds of cheese are presented in the gallery, and their taste depends on the predominance of a particular kind of food in the diet of a lactating woman. The cheese is of great demand, and many speak about its useful properties. Simun hopes that her cheese will make people think about the future use of resources of the human body – blood, hair, and sperm – to help those who will need it.

World Health Organization has issued recommendations on the time when the child should be best transferred from breastfeeding to complementary foods. But the British researchers have reached the conclusion that the late introduction of complementary foods may harm the child’s health. This kind of discovery can lead to a real revolution in the fields of neonatology and pediatrics.

According to the authors of the study, introducing complementary foods should take place before reaching the age of six months. And feeding with breast milk, in its turn, threatens with certain risks to the health of the developing organism.

First of all, breastfeeding causes a high risk of iron deficiency anemia. Moreover, anemia can take a lot of time to discover.

Apart from that, the researchers note that the child has a greater tendency to be allergic to foods after consuming only mom’s milk for a long time.

In addition, the children who are breastfed for a long time may suffer from further problems with the gastrointestinal tract.

However, whenever the authors of the study suggest complementary foods, they do not mean artificial mixtures based on milk, but real “adult” food.

The authors also note that they are by no means opposed to breastfeeding of babies, they merely shift the starting date of using complementary foods from six months to four months.

During pregnancy, there will be a point when a woman will need special clothing to accommodate her growing baby bump. In the early months of pregnancy, these clothes are of course not needed as a woman’s normal clothes will fit, but be a bit snug. Generally into the second trimester, pregnant women will need maternity clothes. Many women wonder what kind of clothing item they need to purchase. There is a variety of clothing items that are a must for pregnant women.

The basic clothing is essential for building a wardrobe of maternity wear. Some women overlook undergarments when purchasing maternity wear. It is important to get comfortable fitting underwear as well as investing in nursing bras that can serve another purpose once the baby arrives. Classic tees are a good item to purchase in maternity wear. You want some variety in colour and styles. Another popular sort of top that is a basic for the maternity wardrobe is a button down oxford shirt. These can look quite becoming during pregnancy.

Also, to accompany these tops would be many different types of bottoms. A popular basic maternity clothing item is pregnancy jeans. These have come a long way over the years in their design and style. Today’s expectant mother can find pregnancy jeans that not only look stylish but are quite comfortable, just how jeans should be. Along with pregnancy jeans buy a few pairs of stretchy dark trousers in neutral colours. These can be paired with many different tops and are comfortable. Also, given the time of year, you might want some shorts to wear. If your pregnancy will take place during the cold winter months, shorts won’t be needed.

Another aspect of assembling a maternity wardrobe for some women might be office attire. This is important for working mums who need to look professional as they work during their pregnancy. Generally, this sort of clothing is rather expensive. Therefore, select classic separates in complimentary colours. This will allow you to mix and match items creating different looks. Therefore, you can generally get through the week with fewer outfits. Take a look at the great choice of maternity clothes on offer at Very.co.uk

One of the results of vast hormonal changes that are generated by pregnancy is the inflow of blood to the breast combined with the inception of active processes in the breast tissue. Your breasts begin to swell and feel extremely sensitive. Actually it is one of the first signs heralding pregnancy.

Some of these sensations may be rather unpleasant – your breasts tinge and get sore too easily. Generally these changes begin to manifest themselves after a month or so and last for about two months. With some women it resembles the sensations in their breasts that they have before their period.

Unpleasant Breast Changes during Pregnancy

While some of these sensations will probably let off after the first trimester, your breasts won’t stop growing. Your skin will be stretching – a process that may be accompanied by itching and appearance of stretch marks. Veins may become more pronounced. Normally you will have to go a couple of cup sizes up, especially if it’s your first pregnancy.

How Nipples and Areolas Change

Your nipples and areolas (the areas surrounding the nipples) will also feel the inflow of blood; they will be growing bigger and darker. Your areolas are covered with tiny bumps that you never gave a thought to before, but now they will grow in size as well. They are called Montgomery’s tubercles and are glands that produce oil.

All these changes go towards making your breasts better fitted for feeding and nursing.

Colostrum Appearance

By the end of the first trimester the time comes when milk begins to appear. At first it is a special kind of milk called colostrum – your baby will be getting it right after the birth. It is thick and yellowish in color. Some women even leak it after they’re halfway through pregnancy, although there’s no reason to be worried if it doesn’t happen with you.

How to Choose the Right Bra during Pregnancy

Pregnancy is the time when the role of bras becomes especially important for securing maximum comfort. You should get a sufficient supply of different bras. Get hold of an experienced salesperson on whose advice you can rely and choose carefully. Purchase bras designed for better support; here are some hints towards choosing the right bra.

Buy bras larger in size both in terms of cups and chest circumference.

Don’t forget that your breasts and your belly are going to keep growing, so it’s a good idea to pick a couple of bras that are too big now but may come in handy later.

When trying them on, always fasten them as tight as you can so you will be able to adjust the setting as you are growing.

Then, go for cotton ones instead of synthetic – they are more comfortable and will provide better ventilation.

If your breasts have gotten very sensitive, hold off bras fitted with wiring. The material must be soft with as few seams as possible, especially around nipples.

Choosing a Bra for Physical Activities

You will appreciate a good supportive bra when you set about your exercising. Your breasts have grown bigger and heavier and you are going to need all the support and comfort that a bra can provide. You will certainly feel the difference during your daily workouts!

Maternity Bra for More Comfort

Go to maternity stores to look for some special kind of bras. You may want to purchase a pregnancy sleep bra which is extra soft and nonrestrictive and will help you get a good night’s sleep. If you feel like getting all the comfort you can, try maternity bras that provide better support in the daytime.

When Should You Buy a Nursing Bra?

While you’re at it, you may as well get a nursing bra. You may find it a very comfortable thing as the delivery approaches and you will certainly need it for comfortable breastfeeding.

The 30-year-old Brazilian supermodel, who gave birth to son Benjamin last December and a few months later surprised everybody by publishing bikini photos showing her excellent figure, puts it down to breastfeeding. For Gisele Bundchen breastfeeding is not just what the doctor ordered, it’s something that “should be a worldwide law” for the first six months.

“I think breastfeeding really helped me keep my figure,” the model shares with Harper’s Bazaar UK, adding that it’s incomprehensible for her that some women should neglect breastfeeding and keep their little children on “chemical food”.

But Bundchen was taking her pregnancy seriously long before her baby saw the light of day. As an expectant mom, she used meditation sessions to prepare herself for the psychological and physical strains of childbirth. “It’s called ‘labor’ not ‘holiday’ for a reason, and I knew that,” she remarked.

Considering that delivery is going to become a major physical experience in the life of a woman, she thinks it strange that other moms-to-be should approach it without due preparations.

Treating childbirth lightly is senseless for the model who regarded it as “work” on her part. “I wasn’t expecting someone else to get the baby out of me,” was Bundchen’s attitude as she laid heavy stress on the necessity on the part of the mom to be ready for the great event.

Kim Kardashian, 29, knows few greater joys than being an aunt – her nephew Mason turned 5 months, and know what? There may be another nephew or niece coming soon!

Khloe, on the 9th, at the shooting of Talk Stoop in Brooklyn, when telling she was not pregnant, nevertheless did let drop that she hopes to be one day soon… And the next day she went to the Lakers championship to root for her husband Lamar Odom.

But being a child-loving woman doesn’t mean Kim stands for unreserved child-caring in public.

Friday she Twittered her indignation when observing at lunch a woman at the next table breastfeeding her baby without covering herself up.

The embarrassing scene over, the woman proceeded to care for her baby putting it on the table and changing the diaper. Too much for one lunch for the E! reality star.

Kourtney, 31, was also in that interview discussing children (She had made it up again with Scott Disick, by the way).

She hates it that her son should be on TV too. Kourtney would have liked it to be different… But she doesn’t want her son out of sight either, and at least, she says, “I don’t have to go to an office!”

A recent research showed that certain antidepressants can adversely affect breastfeeding, delaying the production of milk for quite long periods, in some cases reaching to 72 hours.

While helping you manage your sleep and deal with emotional upheavals, antidepressants can interfere with the milk secretion process, causing difficulty with breastfeeding and probably inability to breastfeed for an adequate period. Quite a number of women seem to be susceptible to this influence, especially those who are going to give birth for the first time.

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism published a study that describes the processes triggered off by the intake of antidepressants, mainly those that belong to the SSRI group (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). They are fluoxetine, sertraline, paroxetine and some others. They are reported to affect serotonin regulation not only in the brain, but also in the breast.

Lead researcher Nelson Horseman remarked that the breasts, being serotonin-regulated glands, are closely connected with serotonin-related processes in the whole body.

Yet the discovery doesn’t undermine the importance of the SSRI antidepressants, Horseman says, calling them “very helpful medications for many moms” that “help them achieve their goals for breastfeeding their babies”.
The article also reports that mothers who had to cope with delayed lactation problems at early stages were perfectly able to breastfeed their babies later.

Cesarean section, scientists found, or instrument-helped birth do not deteriorate in any way mothers’ breastfeeding rate.

A study published in BMC Pediatrics states that there is no correlation between the way the baby came into the world and the mother’s breastfeeding ability; the use of helping techniques does not interfere with breastfeeding nor does it shorten its possible period.

Breastfeeding duration also shows an insignificant link with the time that elapsed between the baby’s birth and putting to the breast.

The most influential factors affecting the rate of breastfeeding are, according to the article, the mother’s ethnicity and the number of pregnancies. Whereas the economic factor has hardly any influence on the issue as well as the mother’s and marital status.

Breastfeeding is known to be a good means of decreasing the risk of putting on too much weight later in life. But so far there has been no research to tell us how breastfeeding should be combined with giving the child solid complementary food.

There’s a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that fills us up on this omission.

The study reports that there is direct correlation between the time when parents begin to introduce complementary food into the child’s diet and the child’s body mass indexes (BMI) when he or she grows up.
The chief factor that is certain to lower BMIs in adulthood is, of course, long breastfeeding. But the time spoon-feeding begins also proved to be of importance. The earlier the child gets complementary food the greater his or her risk of gaining weight later in life. Therefore it is better to postpone spoon-feeding until the baby is past the sixth month.

“The later you introduce complementary feeding to an infant, within the range of 2 to 6 months, the smaller is the risk that the infant will be overweight as adult,” is the conclusion of lead researcher Kim Fleischer Michaelson of the University of Copenhagen.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and American Academy of Pediatrics are unanimous in recommending breastfeeding for the first six months and postponing complementary food for as long as possible. Late spoon-feeding can reduce the risk of becoming obese by 5 to 10 percent.

Michaelson holds that spoon-feeding should better be delayed until the fifth month in any case.

Many recent researches showed great benefits of breastfeeding. Breastfed babies are considered to be healthier, more fortified against heart disease, diabetes, chest infections, high blood pressure, eczema, leukemia, asthma, and, finally, obesity. Baby girls are also more immune to breast cancer.
While mothers have been urged to breastfeed as long as it’s possible, we should bear in mind that it’s not always a case of not wanting to.

A new study published in Acta Obstetricia and Gynacologica Scandinavica says that hormone imbalance may seriously get in the way of breastfeeding. According to the research, if a pregnant woman registered a high level of the male hormone testosterone it may cause considerable difficulty in feeding her baby.

That happens due to testosterone interfering with the functions of glandular tissue in the breast, thus impairing the breastfeeding ability.

And there is one more factor: breast milk has not been found to be uniquely beneficial for the newborn.

Professor Sven Carlsen, lead researcher, goes as far as to state that “when you look at the epidemiological studies and try to strip away the other factors, it is really hard to find any substantial benefits among children who were breastfed as babies.”

She concludes that while breastfeeding is undoubtedly advantageous for children it shouldn’t be regarded as a key factor in making the child healthy. There’s no urgent need for mothers to force themselves to breastfeed if they are uncomfortable with it.

Diabetes has published a study on the effect breastfeeding produces upon mothers’ metabolic syndrome, a condition characterized by a number of factors like elevated blood pressure and insulin resistance; it usually goes along with obesity problems and may lead to contracting diabetes and heart disease.

The research shows that breastfeeding has proven to be quite potent in lessening the risk of these symptoms developing in new mothers. Nine months’ and longer breastfeeding is able to pull down the metabolic syndrome threat by 56 percent. If a woman continues to breastfeed constantly for the next 15 years she is highly likely to drop the threat by further 15 percent yearly.

It is believed that women suffering from gestational diabetes run a chance of bringing the metabolic syndrome threat by 86 percent through breastfeeding alone.

In general breastfeeding women leading a healthier lifestyle tend to drop the pregnancy weight faster in comparison with those who decided against breastfeeding.

Nursing even for a shorter periods like a couple of months also proves to be salubrious, scientists concluded, although for a better protection a longer period of breastfeeding is advisable.

Breast milk should be fed to babies as soon as it’s been expressed. Breast milk ingredients fluctuate over 24 hours to adjust to baby’s needs, according to Spanish researchers, so it should not be stored for a long time.

Breast milk contains various ingredients such as nucleotides that play major role in sleep control at night. New study carried out in Spain showed breast milk ingredients greatly fluctuate during the day. Researchers looked at three nucleotides in milk – adenosine, guanosine and uridine – which act as stimulants or sedatives, causing a healthy sleep, or, on the contrary, restlessness. Researchers examined the milk breast ingredients taken from 30 women during the day (6 to 8 samples were examined). The highest level of nucleotides was found at night time, from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

According to lead author Cristina Sanchez, this explains how breast milk can make babies sleepy. You won‘t brew some coffee for someone who’s going to bed. The same is true with breast milk. It contains special “daytime” ingredients that stimulate baby’s activity at daylight and “night time” ingredients that help baby to rest. To ensure healthy diet, breast milk should be given to a baby at the same time as it’s been expressed. Storing expressed milk is a mistake, according to experts.

Breastfeeding being regarded as highly beneficial for the health of both mother and baby, it is recommended by scientists and doctors to breastfeed for six months in the least. Ways are sought to induce more mothers to nurse their children accordingly. But it was discovered that the use of some prescribed medications can influence the ability to breastfeed adversely. They include some painkillers and medicines that are intended to preclude postpartum bleeding.

A study published in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, reveals that the effect of some clotting agents like oxytocin or ergometrine influences breastfeeding during the two days following the birth by retarding milk production.

Although in the opinion of scientists that effect may be disregarded in favor of these drugs’ ability to decrease the risk of after-birth bleeding from 18% to 6%.

“The potentially life-saving treatments to prevent bleeding after birth must not be compromised on the basis of this study but further studies are required to establish ways to minimize any effects on breastfeeding rates,” ran the conclusion.

Scientists are proceeding with research to provide more support to women to ensure propitious breastfeeding right upon the birth of the baby.

No matter how much you are excited about pregnancy, it also brings anxiety and fears. These fears are quite natural, but you can foresee and eliminate some of them. During pregnancy, you must focus on the health of your breast. Even the smallest tumor may start expanding. Unremoved fibroadenoma (benign tumor) may get in the way of lactiferous ducts, hamper lactation and provoke mastitis or other dangerous diseases.

Why Going To Breast Physician?

Unfortunately, visiting a breast physician is something that a lot of expectant moms tend to skip. But breast physician’s advice is very important for every pregnant woman. Breast physician can tell you more than just how to take care of your breast during your pregnancy. The doctor would also advise you on breastfeeding, preventing plugged duct, avoiding nipple injuries when breastfeeding and many other vital things every mom should know. And what’s more important, you’ll be examined! If any malformation is found in a woman under 40, the doctor will send her to do a breast ultrasound scan. If a woman is over 40, whatever her complaints are, she is sent to undergo a mammography. Mammography examination requires precautions and should be done 2-3 months before getting pregnant.

You absolutely have to go to your breast physician, if:

You had multiple abortions or miscarriages

You had or have thyroid gland disorders, cystic ovary, uterine fibroid, breast fibroadenoma, or broken breast

Your first pregnancy is after 30 years old.

Your breast is a very vulnerable and fragile body part that requires extra care during pregnancy.

Suntan during Pregnancy

Breast physicians do not recommend sunbathing with your breast naked because intense exposure to the sun is harmful for tender breast skin. Take extra care sunbathing during pregnancy and lactation period. First, exposure to the sun may be harmful and, second, it may cause pigment spots.

Hair Growing on Breast during Pregnancy

Many women get very worried about hair growing on breast during pregnancy. It’s doubtful if you should remove them. If they really annoy you, you can pluck them, carefully protecting your skin from possible inflammation.

Underwear for the Growing Breast

Wearing tight underwear is unhealthy because your breast is getting ready for the feeding process during pregnancy. Breast grows in size and weight, so you need a comfortable bra that holds your breast in place without squeezing. You should change bras as your breast grows larger. Choosing the right bra ensures your breast won’t get saggy later.

Breast Treatment

You must have heard the advice to rub nipples with rough towel. Practice shows that this kind of treatment often irritates the skin of nipples and causes cracks in advance of breastfeeding. Besides, this treatment stimulates the release of oxytocin, the hormone causing womb contractions. And while it helps the womb to recover during breastfeeding, pregnancy is not the right time for those contractions. They increase the tonus of the womb and may provoke preterm birth later on.

Breast affusion with cold water is healthy provided you do affusion for the rest of your body. Series of studies haven’t found the breast affusion with cold water improves lactation.

Breast Stretch Marks Cream

To prevent stretch marks, use special creams, this will help you avoid or minimize the formation of stretch marks as well as maintain breast elasticity. Apply the cream on your breast with gentle rubbing.

While it doesn’t work for women who have no family cancer history, the difference it creates for high-risk women with a positive family history is quite a considerable one.

A study in the Archives of Internal Medicine gives an impressive figure: women who have breast cancer handed down in their family can lower the possibility of developing cancer growth in the breast by 59 percent through nursing their babies.

Scientists say that breastfeeding diminishes or prevents engorgement and inflammation of the breast – the factors that are highly conducive to developing breast cancer. It helps normalize breast tissue and bring it back to its pre-pregnancy state at a quicker pace.

Nursing was found to produce effects similar to taking the hormone therapy tamoxifen that is prescribed to prevent breast cancer.

Another effective anti-cancer measure is a certain medication that reduces the production of breast milk; it can decrease breast cancer threat by 42 percent.

All that makes nursing greatly advisable for women with a positive family history for the disease to escape the looming danger.

According to WHO official reports, the introduction of correct breastfeeding will make a difference of 1.3 million saved children’s lives every year. It lessens the risk of babies contracting pneumonia, diarrhea and other illnesses, to a considerable extent.

Health experts assert that breast milk provides all the nutrients the infant needs during the first half year.

Therefore the WHO guidelines specify that nursing should begin from the birth of the child, and the child should be fed on breast milk solely for the six following months.

The WHO statement appearing to coincide with the World Breastfeeding Week starting on August 1, proclaims that the global breastfeeding rate for babies in their first half-year, if heightened to 90 percent, can take away about 13 percent from the annual 10 million deaths of infants younger than 5.

The official statement suggests that hospitals, health clinics and social workers should instruct new mothers on the correct breastfeeding procedure.

It is all the more necessary since according to statistics only under 40 percent of mothers of the world observe the correct procedure, while many others quit giving children breast because it is painful and uncomfortable for them for various reasons.

Another important suggestion related to the swine flu threat is that pregnant women manifesting A/H1N1 symptoms should be immediately treated with antiviral drugs like Tamiflu and the swine flu vaccine. It is believed that should mothers or their baby develop swine flu and the mother is receiving antiviral treatment, it doesn’t constitute a reason to stop breastfeeding.

It turns out that the desire to shed the weight gained during pregnancy fast can have negative effects on the mother’s health as well as the baby’s. According to a recent study, women should avoid extreme weigh loss plans immediately after giving birth. Why?

Scientists from the German Institute of Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) found the answer to this question. They conducted a study on 250 female volunteers. The medics examined dynamics of weight during pregnancy and after childbirth. As it turns out, women should get worried about the excess weight only if they don’t get back to their normal shape and weight by the time the child is one. Moreover, those women who breastfed and watched their diet returned to their regular weight or even went below it within a year. On the other hand, most women who started to work hard on losing weight within a month after childbirth shortly stopped breastfeeding as well.

It naturally takes 3 to 12 months for a woman to return to her normal weight (the rate of weight reduction depends on the initial state of health and body). If you want to get back to your normal weight then you should start taking care of your diet during pregnancy. Most importantly you need to forget about the stereotype that a pregnant woman should eat for two, as this is a common mistake which leads to overeating and excess weight after childbirth.
