A new study by American and British scientists has shown that the children who are often bullied by their peers or adults, are prone to cause physical harm to themselves. They are also at an increased risk of suicide.

Such children often deliberately hurt themselves: cut hands, pull out hair, beat their head against the wall. They often have a suicidal mood – in this case, they may fulfil their plans quickly if adults do not pay attention to their problems in time.

The study showed that the adolescents who were bullied three times more that their peers had an 8% risk to hurt themselves. For those who rarely got into such situations this figure equalled 2%. Moreover, girls hurt themselves more often than boys do. The authors of the study emphasize a few factors that increase the risks: a similar case that took place within the family, abuse, behavioural and emotional problems.

A Mexican woman Carla Vanessa Perez is going to become the new world champion in fertility. The local media report says that Carla is pregnant with nine babies!

According to the doctors, the woman will go into labour before 20 May. Perez says that she is going to deliver six daughters and three sons. Now she is at one of the Mexican hospitals near the border with the United States. Once the future world record was made known, Carla’s pregnancy became one of the most popular topics in the Mexican media.

According to the would-be record holder, the reason for such “great happiness” is in vitro fertilization that Perez made when she was treated for infertility. The woman has not thought of the babies’ names yet, as she worries about the delivery. The woman also conceals her age and the exact place of residence.

However, there are also sceptics who accuse Carla Perez of a lie. They believe that the woman is just trying to attract more attention. Recently, one of the employees of the hospital, where the future mother is supposedly observed, said he saw Carla’s ultrasound and announced in his speech on the Televisa channel that she was not even pregnant. Now the local authorities are checking this information.

If Carla Perez is really pregnant, the woman will be called the mother with the largest number of children, provided that all of them are born alive. It will be recalled that the last time nine babies were born was in 1971 by an Australian, Geraldine Brodrick. But, unfortunately, none of the five boys and the four girls survived: two were born dead, the rest died six days after the birth.

Patricia Krentcil, a 44-year-old mother from New Jersey, is such a great believer in the beauty of a creosote-colored skin that she is said to have taken her 5-year-old daughter along to a tanning booth which is against the law.

Sunbeds are addictive and not quite harmless, as is borne out by a number of experts in the field. Talking to NJ.com, Sophie Balk, a pediatrician at New York’s Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, explained that the phenomenon of addiction to artificial sunbathing, known as “tanorexia,” gives the feeling of relaxation that many people develop a habit for. Later they may find it hard to give up the habit and even suffer from withdrawal symptoms. “They may know it’s bad but they can’t cut back,” she concluded, adding that withdrawal causes anxiety and fits of depression. Jeanine Downie, a dermatologist in Montclair, New Jersey, says sunbathing can cause addiction due to the release of dopamine, for this neurotransmitter enhances a sense of well-being. Besides, there are chronic tanners who cling to the belief that dark skin makes them look healthier and more beautiful.

By now it’s common knowledge that too much sunbed lying is fraught with health threat: the danger of developing skin cancer becomes much higher in tanorexics. The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that sunbathers run 4 times more risk of developing melanoma. Dr. Downie says it’s not surprising since tanning beds are about 15 times as ultraviolet active as the sun – therefore a chronic tanner increases his or her chances of melanoma by 75 % with every next tan. According to authorities, Ms Krentcil brought her fair-complexioned daughter with her to a tanning salon, and the child ended up with multiple burns. The girl was 5, whereas the New Jersey law prohibits the use of tanning salon to children below 14.

Ms Krentcil admits to having developed a tanning habit. On the following day the girl’s kindergarten teacher saw the burns covering the girls’ body and called in medical help. Eventually Ms Krentcil was arrested and taken to the Superior Court where she was accused of child endangerment. Ms Krentcil was heard to say before the hearing that the accusation was a “made up” affair. At the court she pleaded not guilty through her attorney.

Beatie, known as the first man officially to bear children, spoke of a split with his 9-year long wife Nancy when taping The Doctors, a syndicated TV show. His other massive news was that he had undergone a gender reassignment surgery that completely made him a man.

Thomas Beatie, 38, was born female but legally adopted a male identity though he was still retaining the reproductive organs he had from birth. In 2007 pictures showing his bearded face and a baby bump made him a one-of-a-kind person.

His wife Nancy, 49, bore two children in her first marriage, but a hysterectomy made her unable to bear any more. Nevertheless, they gave birth to two mutual children.

Every marriage goes through good and bad patches, said Beatie, and right now they are having a rough-weather period that led to a separation. His wife hasn’t even seen the after-operation Thomas, she has a surprise in store!

The Doctors featuring Beatie will be on on May 7.

The experts from Yale University have analyzed the effect of holidays on the date of birth. They were inspired to conduct this study, when they learned the fact that many mothers wanted their baby to be born on the eve of a romantic holiday.

The most popular holiday, according to statistics, was Valentine’s Day, and the “worst” one was Halloween.

The experts have found that every year from February 5 to February 25 fertility is increased by 3.7% with the help of natural childbirth, and by 13% via cesarean childbirth.

Another interesting fact was also discovered by the scientists. It turns out that the number of births decreases at the end of October. Natural childbirth happens about 5% less often, and cesarean section is reduced by 17%.

The obtained facts go to prove that women can control not only the date of surgery, but the dates of natural childbirth as well.

Becca Levy, the author of the new study, thinks that such a term as “spontaneous labor” is no longer true. This is explained by the fact that pregnant women can easily control the beginning of labor. This is because the beginning of delivery itself is affected by the hormones, and the latter, in their turn, are influenced by the emotions that arise while waiting for the favorite holiday.

This does not mean that shaved heads have become fashionable. Such dolls have a completely different purpose. Bald dolls are created specifically for the children, who have had cancer and chemotherapy.

Barbie doll has celebrated its 53rd anniversary quite recently. It has undergone so many changes over the years! Barbie has tried all styles of dress, all possible hairstyles and makeup. She had many different occupations, ranging from a nurse to a diver. She even gave birth to a baby – there was such a doll with an imposed “tummy”, wherefrom the baby appeared. And now… Barbie may have cancer and go through chemotherapy.

It all began with Bratz doll, which is often called Barbie’s friend. Thanks to Facebook, the idea of creating a bald doll collected quite a lot of supporters. This idea was shared with the creators from the Mattel doll company, and they announced, via Facebook again, that they would produce the first doll without hair in June.

Most of the dolls will be sent to the Children’s Hospital and presented to the girls, who have had alopecia (hair loss) after cancer and radiation therapy.

When the doll goes on sale, every dollar obtained from selling it will be sent to help sick children. It is worth saying that the doll will be magnificent. It will have wigs, accessories, hats, and scarves. All of this should teach the girls, who have suffered from hair loss, to live with this further.

Meanwhile, the fans of Barbie dolls are keen on having their doll support girls with cancer and have already launched a campaign to collect signatures for the idea. And they say that they may be able to repeat what the fans of the Bratz doll did. They wish Barbie had alopecia.

A new study has revealed irregularities in the DNA-and RNA-cells in the prefrontal cortex of autistic children.

Previous studies showed that the brain of autistic children was larger in comparison with healthy children, especially in the prefrontal cortex, which played a key role in thinking, language skills, decision-making, and social behavior.

While studying this anomaly, the researchers from the University of California San Diego Autism Center analyzed the tissues of the prefrontal cortex of 33 postmortem brain samples of autistic and non-autistic people aged 2 to 56 years. It was found that the brain, suffering from this disease, included other variations of both DNA and RNA (ribonucleic acid), which played an important role in protein synthesis. The author of the study, Eric Courchesne, explains that the RNA-violation in the autistic brain, is most likely related to the genes that encode the proteins regulating cell growth. According to the researcher, they found out that the links, that had to govern the genesis of brain cells and develop them, were abnormal, and the same was true about the links governing the formation and removal of neurons. The connections, which should have regulated DNA repair, did not work.

How are these changes, after all, associated with autism? Scientists believe that an excessive number of neurons or brain cells can explain its larger size compared with the human brain, not suffering from this disease. In numbers, it looks like this: about 0880000000 neurons in the prefrontal cortex in healthy children and about 1570000000 in autistic children.

British doctors are sounding the alarm. Tight swaddling of babies is coming back into fashion in this country after being forgotten about 25 years ago.

Many British mothers believe (not without the help of some doctors, misguided in this matter) that tight swaddling helps the newborn feel more secure. However, this practice of swaddling – when both arms and legs are held tightly to the baby – weakens the joints of the child. This is confirmed by the statistics of recent years: there has been a growing number of cases of hip dysplasia in newborns in Britain.

Professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Southampton, Dr. Nicholas Clarke, believes that there is no need for tight swaddling of babies. It is necessary to leave enough space for the baby to bend its legs, because there is still plenty of time for them to “straighten out”. It will take about a year before the child makes the first steps.

The leader of the “little monsters” Lady Gaga is going to get a real family. The singer really intends to give birth to a baby in the near future.

Outrageous Lady Gaga does not just talk about planning to create a family and raise children. However, previously the singer assured her fans that this would not happen before she released ten new albums. Apparently, Lady Gaga will not keep her word: the close to the singer sources report that the star is going to give birth in the coming year.

The main reason for such radical changes in her priorities might be Lady Gaga’s new boyfriend, actor Taylor Kinney. The couple began dating in mid-2011, and by the end of the year the beloved decided to live together. And so, despite the fact that Kinney asked Lady Gaga to abandon her shocking image, which brought her success, the singer began to make plans for their future life.

A credible source told the reporters that Gaga was already choosing a name for the baby, jotting down the options she liked. She constantly talks about how pretty the baby will be, because Taylor is “just handsome”!

It is with Taylor that she wants love, marriage and family. But Lady Gaga is firmly determined first to give birth and then to get married. And the singer’s friend told that the baby had to be born as early as next year! It seems that this time the singer really has serious intentions. Previously, when Gaga dated Luke Charles, she did not think about children. And now she cannot talk about any other things!

The singer got acquainted with the 30-year-old Kinney in the summer of 2011, during the shooting of the video for the song «You and I». By that time, the actor of the “Vampire Diaries” was already thinking about how to start a family. As reported by Taylor’s friends, he remained “on cloud nine” because he had wanted to settle down and have a normal family life for a long time.

Another confirmation of the couple’s serious intentions was their joint visit to Taylor Kinney’s family in Lancaster, where they informed the family of the actor about their desire to become parents.

It is difficult to say, how the change of personal status will affect Lady Gaga’s work and career because previously the singer had said that for the sake of music she “would be married to loneliness”. Fortunately, the experience of her stage colleagues showed that having children did not hinder the career development. So, the singer Beyonce, who gave birth to a daughter Ivy Blue on January 7, 2012, is already actively working to regain her shape at the gym and plans to star in a movie again.

The legends about the success of many celebrities, who attended yoga classes and had a salt-free diet, are unlikely to have something to do with reality.

According to the reports from the sources associated with the elite plastic surgery of many stars, celebrities resort to the most extreme methods in order to regain their good shape.

Radical Weight Loss Methods after Childbirth Celebs Prefer

Thus, Dr. Carson Liu told in an interview with FOX that most celebrities resorted to the most extreme weight loss methods after childbirth. The doctor had very serious doubts as to whether these methods could be called healthy. Hollywood celebrities have a huge external pressure. They just have to lose weight after giving birth, and that is what is expected of them.

Strict Dieting after Childbirth

Another expert tells about such a “conventional” method: immediately after birth the star begins to starve in order to undergo liposuction as quickly as possible. This is accompanied by a procedure known among the professionals as “fat transferring”, which involves surgical removal of fat from one part of the body and its transfer to another one.

Celebrities Opt for Surgery to Get a Slim Body Again After Pregnancy

According to plastic surgeon Constantino Mendieta, most women discover that after birth their body simply does not respond to diet and exercise. Celebrities need to recover their former shape, literally, overnight. Women often have to remove the fat from the abdomen and move it to the buttocks to restore the fullness and roundness of the star rear. It works well for the women, who want to boast a flat stomach. The “good job” costs 13,000 dollars.

Extreme Breast Milk Pumping to Lose Weight

The struggle for the figure does not end here. Most of the stars, in the words of another expert, are engaged in “extreme breast milk pumping” to restore their breast shape. They pump the milk day and night. Celebrities always have a lot of empty bottles at hand.

Placenta Injections

Some even use their own placenta, which is injected daily, in a combination with low-calorie diet. The tool is effective, but also very dangerous because it can lead to colon cancer.

Healthy After-Childbirth Weight Loss Tips

Dr. Liu advises women not to resort to such extremes, but to protect their health and the health of their child. If you want to lose weight and not lose health, just be careful with what you eat, have breast-feeding when you can, and do physical exercises an hour a day. The results will not be instantaneous, but they will not be fatal and disappointing.

The scientists from the University of Poitiers are sure that if parents and teachers help children to treat their mistakes and difficulties normally, the child’s working memory, that is required for processing and storing information as well as for further education, will begin to function better.

Psychologists say that difficulties usually make people nervous. As a result, the fear of making a mistake interferes with the working memory.

The experts stress that one needs only a little self-esteem and confidence to enhance the working memory of the child in general.

Little Briton Rean Carter is five years old, and his hair still has not been touched by scissors. The boy’s golden hair reaches down to his waist, and he dreams about visiting a barber. But … his mother is against it!

Perhaps the romantic parent just follows the example of some star mothers, who at various times allowed their sons to display shoulder-length hair.

The Story of Rean Carter’s Long Hair

According to Leeanne Smith, the mother of the long-haired angel, when Rean was born, his head was adorned with golden curls. The hair grew, and she just could not raise her hand to cut it. Now Rean has very soft long hair, and he is often mistaken for a girl while walking along the street. Previously, the boy would not get offended at all, he just laughed in response…

As soon as the handsome boy went to school, everything changed. The mother had to do the hair in a ponytail, and the classmates immediately thought it was an occasion for jokes. Tired of ridicule, Rean asked his mother to take him to the barber. But the lady weeps at the mere thought that she will have to cut the boy’s hair. She is sure she will just burst into tears when it happens. For the golden locks not to be wasted, the child’s parents want to give them to the cancer treatment center, where they can be used to make a wig.

Celine Dion’s Son René-Charles Used to Have Long Hair

Rean is not the only boy with long hair. René-Charles, Celine Dion‘s son, had once been known for having magnificent hair. The boy, who is now 11 years old, used to have his hair below his shoulders, and he never collected and sticked it. Oprah Winfrey asked Celine in 2008 why she would not take the boy to a beauty salon. The singer said it was the boy who decided when to get a haircut. By that time René had not voiced any of such plans, but Celine Dion was sure that once her son would have his hair cut. And a year later, René finally came with an idea to have his first haircut at the age of eight years.

Sarah Jessica Parker’s Son James Wilkie Loves Having Long Hair

Sarah Jessica Parker‘s son is another fan of long hair. James Wilkie’s reluctance to have a “haircut like a boy” does not bother his mother, but raises much discussion in the press. From time to time, tabloids appear with the headlines like “Is it time for a haircut, James Wilkie?” or “Sarah Jessica has no time to take her son to the barber?” At the same time Parker is confident that her child’s desire really matters, and if he does not want to cut his hair, let him have it.

Kate Hudson’s Son Ryder Was Against Hair Cut

But Kate Hudson still took her child to the barber, as he grew older. Ryder Robinson, Kate’s eldest son from her marriage to rocker Chris Robinson, did not want to get a haircut at first. The little boy followed the example of his long-haired father. Kate admitted before the haircut that it must have been the influence of his father. The boy just liked how Chris looked, and he wanted to be the same.

Cindy Crawford’s Son Presley Walker

Cindy Crawford’s son, as well as our first hero Rean, had been too often confused with girls just before he cut off his blond curls. Presley now looks like a man. But the beauty is still with him, irrespective of the long or short hair.

What do you think about the children’s haircuts? Do we need to take into account the child’s opinion in such matters?

The children, who suffer from pauses in breathing during sleep, breathe through the mouth or snore, are more likely to have behavioral problems.

These are the results of the new study, which was conducted in England. The researchers analyzed the questionnaires of 11,000 children. First of all, the data about the quality of sleep were collected when the children were 6, 18, 30, 42, 57, and 69 months old, and then the parents were asked to answer some questions about the behavioral factors of their children (at the age of 4 and 7 years).

According to the statistics collected, 45% of the children had no problems with the quality of sleep. 55% of the children demonstrated all the three signs of breathing problems.

After the exclusion of other factors influencing social adjustment, the researchers found that the likelihood of behavioral problems in children with sleep disorders ranged from 40% to 100%. The more the symptoms of respiratory failure manifested themselves, the higher was the risk of such problems as hyperactivity, aggression, unwillingness to follow the rules, anxiety, depression, and difficulties with socialization among peers.

The researchers recommend that more attention should be paid to children’s nighttime recreation, providing all the factors of healthy sleep (mode, ventilation, quiet games). It is extremely important since breathing problems can affect the child’s behavior and disrupt the balance in various body systems in the long term.

Promoting physical activity among students can improve their academic performance.

A new study on physical and intellectual education of children was conducted in Italy. The scientists observed the performance indicators of adolescents aged 8 to 11 years in response to the complaints from their teachers about the reduction of the students’ attentiveness and concentration. The children were asked to pass three exams (the tests only took three weeks), lasting for 50 minutes each. Before the first exam, each student had been engaged in some form of exercise. Before the second test, the children simply attended regular classes at school. And before the third one, they were offered both physical and mental activity.

The most effective “key to high performance” were sports exercises performed immediately before the exam. On the contrary, the combination of exercise and studying worsened the results: the speed of processing information during the exam decreased as well as the students’ overall results. The authors of the study attribute this fact to the increasing tension of combining physical and mental activity before performing more complex tasks, such as the exam.

Perfluorinated compounds, which are found in food packaging and textile products, can cause disorders of the immune system in children.

The researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health have conducted a study, which showed that the effectiveness of vaccines (diphtheria, tetanus) is greatly reduced for children, whose blood contains higher concentrations of perfluorinated compounds (PFC). So, seven-year-old children, whose concentration of PFC in the blood was twice exceeding the norm, had the reduction of the number of antibodies by 49%. Accordingly, the likelihood of being infected with diphtheria and tetanus was 4(!) times higher in some cases.

When the concentration of PFC in the body increases, the immune system becomes more sluggish and less capable of supporting protection mechanisms to combat pathogens. Thus, the children, who participated in the study and showed a high concentration of the PFC in the blood, had a smaller number of tetanus and diphtheria antibodies. The consequences of this failure may be the child’s having development problems, impaired reproductive function, as well as other health problems.

German researchers have drawn the conclusion that Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) because of sleep apnea can sometimes be determined by genetic causes.

DNA analysis of a small group of children showed that the tested male infants had a certain mutation of the enzyme, which could interfere with the ability of proper breathing during sleep. However, this mutation was not found in girls.

The author of the study, Dr. Michael Klintschar, director of the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Medical University of Hannover, explains that his team tried to take into account the previous studies, which proved that the deviation in the brain stem, regulating breath and other basic body functions, led to SIDS. The doctor adds that the causes of these disorders remain unclear, but some scientists believe that genes inherited from parents may be one of several factors leading to SIDS.

German scientists point out that parents can reduce the risk of SIDS by 50%, avoiding to lay the baby on its stomach. In addition, this risk reduces the use of pacifiers. Among other risk factors, scientists indicate parental smoking right next to the child, excessive wrapping of the child, or sleeping in a hot unventilated room.

The experts note that the number of complications due to undertreated SARS has increased dramatically in recent years. According to the statistics, the number of sinusitis has increased from 5-10% to 10-20%.

Almost every child under the age of 3 years experiences from 1 to 2 cases of acute otitis media. 70-80% of children, seeking medical help and addressing the otolaryngologist, are already at the advanced stage of the disease.

It is not only impossible – it is needless to fully protect the children from respiratory virus infections, because it is experienced cases of SARS that gradually form a child’s immune system and its insensitivity to the same, but perhaps more serious, viral infections in the future. However, it is essential that these episodes of the disease should be relatively light, without complications and not too frequent.

With the proper treatment of respiratory viral infections, the recovery occurs after an average of 7-10 days, and the allowable frequency of the disease is limited to 5-6 episodes per year for preschoolers and 3 episodes of SARS for school children. Longer or more frequent illnesses already have the risk of complications.

Cough, runny nose (rhinitis, sinusitis), hoarseness (laryngitis) are all symptoms of SARS, and their treatment should be supervised by a therapist or pediatrician, depending on the patient’s age. Aggravated runny nose or cough can cause serious complications.

The study was conducted in Scotland, and its results were published in “Journal of Epidemiology and Public Health“. The research involved 850 people aged 15, 35, and 55 years. Their habits, health indicators and lifestyles had been studied during 20 years. One in five people, who participated in the study, had lived in the same place during the childhood, 59% had moved once or twice, and about 21% had moved at least three times. Children in single-parent families or living with a stepfather were proved to move across the country or the world more often than others. The families with two or three children were also more likely to move than families with four or more children.

In general, those who had moved more often than others, demonstrated health problems, they were weaker than their peers, and got sick more often. They also had frequent psychological stress, drinking and smoking problems in the adolescent age and later, when these children became adults.

Premature babies, born via Cesarean section, may face the 30% higher risk of serious breath problems.

This was reported by the researchers from the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Respiratory distress syndrome, which occurs primarily in premature infants and can lead to breathing problems, blindness and brain damage, is the most common in babies, born via Cesarean section. The researchers have analyzed the data associated with the premature birth of 2,560 children (25 to 34 weeks of pregnancy) in New York’s hospitals from 1995 to 2003. 54% of the births took place with the use of Cesarean section. Later, 30% of the infants had breath problems.

The head of the research, Eric Werner, comments on the results of the research of his group saying that he is acutely aware as a physician that the rate of cesarean section among modern women is growing every year. And the surgery is often carried out not for medical reasons. Werner also says that the use of Cesarean section for premature babies is not always justified, since it does not provide protection from adverse consequences. And this surgery is necessary only in extreme cases, when it comes to saving the lives of mothers and children.

Werner also stresses that future mothers should clearly understand that by agreeing to Cesarean section for aesthetic reasons or for fear of giving birth on their own, they risk the health of the child. This is a serious surgery, which may be associated with complications.

The children, who undergo a surgery with general anesthesia at the age of under two years, may face a higher risk of developing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

There has been a study at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, involving 5,357 children born between 1976 and 1982. If they experienced at least two surgical interventions before their second birthday, ADHD was twice as likely to be diagnosed until the age of 19, if to compare them with their peers.

The author of the study, David O. Warner, MD, explains that the longer the child is unconscious, the higher the risk of developing ADHD is. However, if the child must have a surgery, the parents still should agree with the doctor. For all that the scientists can say for sure is that they can not exclude the possibility of such problems, but the clear causal relationship has not yet been found.

The concerns about the potential influence of general anesthesia on brain development were first introduced about 10 years ago, when the experiments were carried out on animals. It became clear that after anesthesia they demonstrated changes in brain regions, associated with behavioral problems.

A new study shows that with age, under certain conditions a girl can develop breast thickening, which is a serious risk factor for cancer. If a mother gives birth to a girl when she is over 39, and if before puberty the girl is taller and thinner than her peers, she has a high chance of getting breast cancer.

Virginia Loup, the author of the study, explains that it is associated with an increased content of hormones. The risk of cancer is also caused by the speed of a girl’s maturation. If breasts begin to grow too rapidly, the predisposition to cancer evolves, as well.

Medical Express reports that breast cancer remains a genetic condition, but other factors also have influence – for example, the age when a woman gives birth to her first child and the number of children.

The study is published in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment.

Us Weekly informs that the new Hollywood baby, named Exton Elias Downey, was born 7 lbs 5 oz, 20 inches from pate to toe and perfectly healthy. The sex had been known from December when Downey and his wife got back from their late fall Hawaiian holiday romp.

Afterwards the Game of Shadows star, 46, discussed the expected arrival light-heatedly with Jay Leno on The Tonight Show, telling the host that he thought he was taking his wife’s pregnancy harder than she did, joking about “the hormones on and the mood stuff and the nausea and the whole thing.”

When E! News reminded him in October of a struggle with dirty diapers awaiting him, he brushed it off casually promising to deal with poop easily.

Exton Elias is Robert Downey Jr.’s second son (the first being Indio, 18, by ex-wife Deborah Falconer), but the first for his wife producer Susan Downey, 38.
