When it’s a question of having children, Giuliana and Bill Rancic are determined to come through with it no matter what – even though in vitro fertilization let them down twice last year. The first time it ended in a miscarriage, and the second time it simply didn’t work, as Miss USA 2011 host told at The Talk on Tuesday – “it’s been really tough.”

But for the Rancic couple it only means that there’s going to be the third time. Their doctor voiced his belief that she would get pregnant, and Giuliana, 35, is getting ready for her next IVF transfer “in the near future.”

Further on, if the IVF fails them the third time, the Rancics have already decided what they would do – adopt a child. The host, who hails from Naples, shared that when they came over to Italy she experienced a connection with her native city and thought it might be a good idea to adopt a child from Naples.

Unexpectedly there were some of her Twitter followers who didn’t see eye to eye with her on this point. Several tweets the host received told her firmly to adopt an American child – and while Rancic agrees wholeheartedly that American kids need help, she doesn’t think it is quite right to advise a woman on that point. When adopting, a woman is to follow her heart.

So, the infertility issue doesn’t get Giuliana Rancic down. She shares that they have taken some time off and are enjoying good things in life trying to keep up a positive attitude and hoping to have a child in the long run.

Just in a few days, there starts a unique in its kind IVF lottery in the UK, in which all women interested have a chance to purchase a lottery ticket worth £ 20 and get a chance to win … a child.

The campaign operates within a charity move to support the couples who have difficulty with procreation and forced to turn to a fairly expensive in vitro fertilization procedure (IVF).

The lucky one to win the jackpot is due a 25000 £ award, which she can spend on an individual course of infertility treatment in one of the best clinics in the country. As the initiators of this idea note, the basis for its development were the statistics, according to which almost three-quarters of public health-care agencies no longer provide this service free. The opponents of the lottery, on the contrary, believe it to be humiliating.

As part of a prize, they provide not only a free IVF with the accommodation in an expensive hotel and transportation to the clinic with a personal driver, but also the provision of donor sperm or ovule. Not only traditional infertile couples may take part in the lottery, but also homosexuals and lesbians. At first, it is planned to raffle off the top prize once a month, but later, if the event is a success, the organizers want to shorten this period to two weeks.

It was revealed during the experiment, conducted among Israeli patients in the process of in vitro fertilization (IVF), that a 15-minute encounter with a professional “medical clown” increased the chances of getting pregnant up to 36%, compared with the women who did not meet the clown.

The essence of the experiment was in the fact that a professional “medical clown” spent half an hour in the patients’ wards after the placing of the embryo into the uterus. The main purpose of this visit was to reduce the patient’s stress.

It had been earlier reported that a nerve-point massage, aimed at reducing stress during the placement of the embryo into a woman’s uterus, doubled the chances of getting pregnant. Scientists believe that the more relaxed a woman is during the placement of the embryo in the uterus, the greater the likelihood is that it will consolidate and begin growing.

In addition, as in any study, there is a possibility that the result is a pure coincidence. Nevertheless, it is worth trying. The clowns are not intrusive and do no harm. As for the people, suffering from infertility, they will have one more reason to smile and forget about the problem.

It is not a secret that in this era of women’s emancipation birthrate in developed countries has significantly decreased. Moreover, the number of pregnancies in the late period of productivity, when a woman is in her late thirties or even in early forties, has increased. However, a woman’s ”biological clock” is not directly related to her age.

Physical wilting is an individual process. Aging process of a woman’s ovaries is by no means less individual; this process is not directly related to the woman’s age. Some women lose fertility when they are rather young, other still have it in their fifties.

British obstetricians developed a special test, which allows every woman to determine whether it is a good idea to bear a child after 30. If the woman’s fertility is decreasing, the test will warn her that delaying childbirth is not a good idea.

This test is the result of the six-year study, which was conducted by biologists at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Dr. Gillian Lockwood began her research after observing that many young women repeatedly fail at conventional In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatment.

While studying a large group of young women, the British scientist discovered that those who failed at IVF also had low levels of inhibin B hormone. It turns out, that level of this hormone is related to functionality of the woman’s ovaries. So, as ovaries lose their ability to produce healthy eggs – levels of this hormone drop at the same rate. Results of this simple test are based on the level of inhibin B hormone in the woman’s body.

Dr. Gillian Lockwood says that many patients who fail at IVF, a lot of them are career women, say that if they knew that their fertility was decreasing they would not have delayed childbearing for so long. The new test will help women stay on top of their fertility and motherhood.

Infertility is the reason for emotional suffering for a surprisingly huge number of men and women. It is a nightmare for a man tormented with infertility to see his wife go into baby obsession mode expecting to conceive each time they have sex.

There can be many issues created by infertility and some of them are:

•	The emotional agony of not conceiving month after month.
•	Tests to figure out the possible problems.
•	Finding the right option that may aid in conception.
•	The outrageous expense of choosing the medical process of conceiving.

Things to do for the Man Wanting to Conceive

You should convince him that the test is not a struggle to prove his masculinity, but an easy process of sperm donation. A fertility test is actually useful, because it will push away all the emotional troubles and find any possible problems. You should make him understand clearly that the test will speed up your conception process and make you feel much better.

The Sperm Test

The test is indeed nothing to be stressed about. It is very easy, and he may even be allowed to collect his sample at the convenience of your home. If it’s not allowed, then he will be asked to go to a private room and deposit his sample; he will even have access to “appropriate pictures” to help him. Of course, it might feel awkward when he will give over the transparent plastic cup filled with his seeds for future generations, but you will soon laugh it away with friends.

The day of the results is perhaps the toughest at day, especially the part of coping with the outcome. The results depend on two things – the shape and size of the sperm (also called morphology) and their ability to swim (also called mobility).

The Sperm Quality

A sad but unexplainable fact is that men’s sperm has degraded in quality over the last few decades (mobile phones are one of the suspects), so an increasingly number of people have to hear that their sperm are no Michael Phelps. These tragic comments are indeed a punch to the self respect of a man, so it is your duty to be very considerate with him, just like you can expect him to be considerate with you if it was the other way around.

Ask for Medical Help in Case of Male Infertility

But most men don’t have to fear anymore, because modern medical achievements have made it possible to turn even the worst swimmers effective. Their progeny can continue due to the blessings of artificial insemination, fertility drugs and IVF. You should explain all your possible options and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each one. You should unanimously agree on an option and advance.

How to Cope with Male Infertility

The most difficult issue of male infertility is finding a way to alleviate the desperation of their partners for not being able to get pregnant. If a woman decides that they want a baby, they usually become very obsessed with it. This obsession is not easily comprehensible by a man, but this is simply a matter of hormones.

Suggestions for the Would-be Pregnant Woman

Take it easy, because conception can take a while. On average, mid to late 20’s old woman can take up to 4 cycles; the numbers increase with age. If you panic in front of him, then this will only pressurize your man and stress him.

Have Fun While Having Sex

Don’t let your desperation ruin the fun of making a baby.

Seek for Medical Help Together

Visit the doctor together in case you are worried about not becoming pregnant. Decide together if you think testing is required or not.

Ask Other Parents for Advice

Seek advice from friends with kids and ask them what worked for them; convince your man to do the same with you.

Never Pressurize!

There are tons of stories out there that say how a couple gave up after years of trying to have a baby and then finally got pregnant. Statistically it seems that pressure has an effect on your chances of becoming pregnant. So take it easy and find ways to relax.

Think about your fertility

It’s better to decide beforehand what to do if things don’t go according to plan. So talk about the chances of fertility and your possible actions.

Support Each Other

The journey of pregnancy to birth to parenting is an adventure that relies heavily on communication, emotional support and consideration. Infertility is like an assassin as bad as miscarriage, and this causes lots of emotional misery.

Children born through in vitro fertilization (IVF) physically grow faster than their peers do. This was the conclusion made by specialists from the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

They claim that IVF children are taller than kids conceived naturally. The researchers analyzed the height of nearly 200 children to come to this conclusion. As a result, it was discovered that the height of children born through IVF at the age of six was higher than that of similar children born naturally. The difference was an average of 2.6 centimeters.

The New Zealand researchers tried to understand the cause of such a difference in the height of children. Their version – medications taken by women to stimulate ovulation during in vitro fertilization are responsible for this.

It is also quite possible that the culture medium in which embryos are placed before implanting them into the uterus is responsible for the high growth. These factors can alter the hormonal profile of children conceived through IVF procedure. In the end, it leads to a more intense physical development of children.

Eventually Celine Dion became pregnant this spring after a string of unsuccessful in-vitro fertilization attempts. There are no pregnancy complications, but she is not taking any chances. The singer is bearing twins that are expected in November, yet it has been confirmed that she is at hospital now.

An official statement issued by St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Fla. denies the rumors that Dion, 42, and her husband Rene Angelil, 68, pre-scheduled the birth and are indulging in excessive pregnancy care demands. Dion is undergoing “the standard of care for any patient with twin pregnancy in this clinical setting” aimed at prevention of an early birth.

Focusing on the well-being of the twins, the couple intends to stay in close touch with doctors and clinical facilities during the latter months of the pregnancy, the statement accentuates.

Aware of the previous IVF miscarriages (the latest one talked over with Oprah Winfrey last year), Dion and Angelil are going to do everything possible to ensure a successful delivery – a priority for any couple “who face these procreation techniques,” as Angelil put it last November when talking with a French-Canadian newspaper.

The illustrious couple’s first son, Rene-Charles, is 9.

The 2010 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to British scientist Robert Edwards for the development of in vitro fertilization (IVF). The prize amount this year is 10 million Swedish kronor (about one million euros). The award ceremony will be held in Stockholm on December 10, the day of death of its founder – Alfred Nobel.

Robert Edwards’ research brought long-awaited happiness (child) to millions of families. He created the world’s first artificial insemination center.

According to a press release issued by the Nobel Prize, to date, more than four million people have been born thanks to this technology.

According to statistics, about 15% of couples are infertile today and only one in four IVF attempts is successful. Presently, almost 3% of the world’s children are born from the tube.

But the Vatican has considered this Nobel Prize committee’s decision as “completely wrong”. Clergymen believe IVF is immoral because many embryos each of which, according to the church, is no less valuable than a living person are killed when using this method. And what do you think?

Reproductive technologies have a significant impact on the sex ratio of newborns. Employees of the University of New South Wales came to these conclusions after studying data on more than 13 thousand births of those that resorted to artificial insemination of women.

According to the researchers, the sex ratio among “test tube children” substantially differed from that among newborns conceived naturally. It is believed that boys and girls make up respectively 51 and 49% of total births in the world. This difference is usually associated with lower chances of survival for male babies.

Among children who were born through reproductive technology, the ratio was different. Depending on the peculiarity of the IVF (in vitro fertilization of an egg with a partner’s sperm in a laboratory) procedure, the proportion of boys among newborns increased to 53-56%. Moreover, among children born with the use of a more sophisticated and expensive technique ICSI (intracytoplasmic injection of single spermatozoon into an egg is used during a man’s low semen quality) the proportion of boys among newborns by contrast dropped to 48.7 – 50%.

In-vitro fertilization (IVF) conception has been found to be greatly affected by such factor as air pollution, as reported in a recent study published in Human Reproduction.

Women trying to conceive through IVF who were exposed to polluted air run a large scale of dangers ranging from a more difficult preterm labor through a possible failure of having a successful birth to a lower weight of the newborn baby and lower IQ performance.

Exposure to different pollutants found in the air can end up in generating inner inflammation; oxygen-free radicals begin to appear in great quantities that damage cells and can even lead to formation of blood clots, which have been long found as pregnancy threats that should be taken very seriously.

The study reveals that vehicle exhaust pollutant nitrogen dioxide (NO2), if exceeding the average level, brings down the chances of a successful IVF birth.

The same result is observed after exposure to ozone after the IVF procedure, although a high ozone level registered during the period of ovulation, to the contrary, promises a better chance of conception.

Having thus added another health concern to the many linked with air pollution, scientists are sure that NO2 makes an important risk factor for expectant parents relying on IVF, yet pointing out that overall influence of various air pollutants is ambiguous and would require extensive investigation.

When babies come into the world naturally, we generally have 105 boys for every 100 girls. That goes to counterbalance the percentage of fatality that appears to be higher for male babies, both unborn and born.

But once artificial fertility measures are taken, a study in Fertility & Sterility reports, the number of male expectances comes down.

The study is looking into a particular reproduction technique scientifically labeled intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). ICSI is the method commonly employed to cope with male fertility problems and it is becoming more popular by day. It involves injecting the father’s sperm into the eggs extracted from the mother.

ICSI is considered very beneficial since it also serves to bring down the chances of giving birth to triplets or even more babies at a time.

But, as it turns out, blastocyst-stage embryos show a direct contrast to what we find in the natural state of things – less male babies are born.

Therefore scientists believe that ICSI shouldn’t be resorted to unless absolutely necessary if we wish to avoid the spread of this potential side effect.

The Canadian prima donna and her husband, Rene Angelil, can have children through using embryos kept in deep freeze in liquid nitrogen. Their son Rene-Charles was born from such an embryo via fertilization.

This year Celine, who is now 41, was reported to have made the second attempt at fertilization, for she and Rene intend to conceive more children.

But now, according to an inside source quoted by Contactmusic, Celine is not bearing a fetus.

She spent years trying to get pregnant, but had no success because of her weight. Doctors claimed, she was too fat for IVF. She used to weigh 264 lb (120 kg).

The woman had several diseases, which were preventing her from conceiving: polycystic ovaries and thyroid gland pathology. She needed to lose weight in order to have IVF. Within a year Rachel dropped over 110 lb (50 kg) and now she weighs 150 lb (68 kg). By the time she was to visit the reproduction center, she realized that she was already pregnant.

Gynecologists remind us, that excess weight is a major cause of infertility. Losing weight increases the chances to conceive.

The twins born by 67-year-old María del Carmen Bousada de Lara from Spain are now left orphans, although they have not turned three yet. Christian and Pau were born in Barcelona in December 2006, just a day before their mom celebrated her 67th anniversary. And last Saturday 69-year-old Maria Carmen lost her fight with cancer and died in her house in south-west Spain. The disease was diagnosed months after having the children. Relatives and friends unanimously talked the pensioner against the pregnancy because of the costly treatment of the woman whose menopause had been 18-year-long by the time.

Being branded as selfish and irresponsible, Maria sold her house for 45 thousand euros to purchase donor sperm and ovules. Later she admitted forging her age for the record downsizing it to 55. She hoped to live up to 101, the age her own mother reached. “I have all reasons to be so sure,” she claimed optimistically. However, she turned to be wrong.

It should be noted that María is not the only woman who set up her mind to have children at that age. Every elderly mother-to-be put forward her reasons and explanations. For instance, Elizabeth Adeney, single mother from England, was up to making her career until she reached 66. Single Spaniard Maria took care of her elderly mother for years. Omkari Panwar from India has a husband, two daughters and five grandchildren, but the couple dreamed of having a son born to the family.

The death of the world’s oldest mother raised much debate about ethics of having IVF at such age. This is thought to be a way-out for single unmarried women who do not care about possible risks while fertility restoring hormones may as well increase the chances of cancer.

Maria’s twins are being taken care by their godfather and nephew who, despite all efforts, will hardly be a proper substitute for the biological parent. Do you believe it is worthwhile to have children at such old age?

Infertility has been a growing nightmare in the developed countries for some time, but medical researchers have finally made a technological breakthrough that will put an end to its reign. Introducing In Vitro Fertilization, or IVF, an idea first proposed in the 1960s by Patrick Steptoe and Dr. Robert Edwards, a psychologist from Cambridge; about ten years after the first IVF baby was born.

In What Cases Is IVF Used?

When IVF was invented, its role was to aid women suffering from infertility caused by infertile or diseased uterine tubes. However, with new developments, IVF can now treat cases like endometriosis, hostile cervical mucus and other infertility related cases. It has even been tested on male partners with a low sperm count problem; although it has been proved to work, the overall success rate isn’t very high.

How Is IVF Done?

In Vitro Fertilization is carried out with a laparoscope, which is basically a form of telescope that is put inside an anesthetized woman’s abdomen to extract an eggs from the ovary just before they are about to be released naturally by ovulation. Separate sperms are collected from the male partner and then washed and diluted. The extracted eggs and the diluted sperm are then mixed in a glass dish. If fertilization between the egg and the sperm is successful, then the embryo is developed in the lab. After about two or three days, the embryo is placed in the woman’s uterus with the help of a plastic tube.

Possible Side Effects of IVF

IVF does have its boundaries and side effects though. The success rate isn’t 100% and there is a risk of ectopic pregnancy, or extrauterine pregnancy – which is a special case when the embryo is inserted and developed outside the uterine cavity; this is very dangerous because in such cases the uterine tube usually erupts. Furthermore, successful implantation and development doesn’t always end up with childbirth. Miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies are more common through IVF than when you try to conceive the natural way.

How Effective Is IVF?

There is no general trend in the success rate for In Vitro Fertilization. The numbers vary from place to place, so it’s difficult to predict the efficiency. Some figures suggest that for each happy couple who went through a successful IVF procedure, there are a few more couples who didn’t have such luck. With technological advancements, the IVF procedure is becoming more and more streamlined and efficient, but the latest facts from the important IVF centers state the following: 8-10% probability of pregnancy if only one embryo is placed in the woman’s uterine tube; 20% probability for two embryos; 30% for three embryos. Considering the dangers involved, more than three or four embryos are never inserted. Again, it must be noted that pregnancy does not always result in birth, just like in natural conditions.

IVF Gives a Hope

In Vitro Fertilization is a great technological development for the infertility treatment. The whole process requires very high tech equipment along with extremely skilled medical operators. No doctors or medical scientists can make success promises with IVF yet, but we can’t deny the fact that IVF has put a smile on many couples’ faces and is a ray of hope for many others waiting for it to be perfected.

Besides the newborns, Nadya, 33, has six other children. All of the fourteen children were conceived with the help of in-vitro fertilization (IVF). The happy mother will have to bring up all 14 children alone.

Nadya’s mother is absolutely against such a large number of children. The grandmother points out that Nadya is not married and all of her children were conceived artificially. Nadya’s gynecologist diagnosed her with tubal occlusion, which means that the woman can not have children, but Nadya found a solution, namely IVF.

A number of embryos were obtained through this procedure. Usually, only one or two are selected for future development, while the rest are destroyed. However, Nadya decided to freeze her embryos. She gave birth after successful transfer of the embryo into her uterus. Later on she repeated the procedure and eventually became mother of six, who are those days between 2 and 7 years old. The woman still had some frozen embryos, so she decided to give birth again. According to Nadya, the number of embryos that were transferred to her uterus originally was less than eight, but she gave birth to eight due to division.
