How to Postpone Pregnancy?

Women will be able to postpone pregnancy by freezing part of their ovaries. This method will be available at the clinic, which will be opened in the UK soon.

At the age of 20 to 30 years, when the ovules are most productive, women will be able to store a part of their ovarian tissue in the “bank”, and when they decide to get pregnant, the tissue will be implanted back.

Currently, only a few countries, including the United States, Denmark, and Belgium, offer such an option of postponing pregnancy. Up to now, 19 children have been born this way.

This method will become quite common, as the studies have shown that freezing ovarian tissue is more efficient than freezing ovules, and even IVF.

It presupposes extraction of about one-third of the tissue from one of the two ovaries, which usually contains about 60,000 ovules.

The tissue is stored in liquid nitrogen at minus 190C, until the woman decides she is ready to become a mother. After that, it is implanted back into the ovary and in a few months the tissue starts producing ovules.

Scientists say that this method is more efficient due to the fact that thousands of ovules are produced in this case compared to only 12 ovules produced during freezing.

This method has been used so far by the women, suffering from oncology, who were treated with chemotherapy to keep the ovary intact.

Dr. Gedis Grudzinskas, a leading consultant in infertility and gynecology, plans to open a clinic in central London by the end of this year. He claims that this technology is much more effective than it has been thought before.

Some doctors believe that the presence of the tissues removed at an early age may impair the woman’s chances of having a baby.
