Train Your Kid’s Memory
These simple tips will help you teach your child to memorize lots of useful and interesting information!
The information presentation should be exciting
Not every adult will cope with memorizing boring facts at once, and the child can even refuse to remember something he/she is not interested in. Your task is to get the child interested, to present the facts in the way that will nourish the children’s natural curiosity.
Think about how to motivate your child to study anything. Optical illusions and simple tricks will help you to make learning funny and full of informative surprises.
Reduce the level of stress
A child can easily remember a fairly large amount of new information, but it is only when stress factors are eliminated from the educational process.
Do not compare one child to another, mentioning his/her peers’ success as an example to follow. Cries and reproaches bring the opposite result – the child will by all means try to avoid the lesson. Distractions, such as a working TV-set or a constantly ringing mobile phone, also reduce the level of perceiving new information.
Techniques that facilitate memorization
All sorts of tongue twisters and rhymes help the child gain confidence among a large amount of new information. You can rhyme something in short couplets, but sometimes longer poems will be appropriate. Cartoons, funny stories in pictures and comics also enhance the children’s ability to concentrate and memorize.
You can make an emphasis on the development of logical thinking and come up with a few puzzles, directly related to the subject of memorizing. Children like to feel like pioneers, so you should actively encourage their creative “discovery.” Do not forget to encourage your baby, if you see that he/she is not confident enough.
Play the “performance game”
Your child is shy in a situation when he/she needs to read a poem in public and forgets the words because of excitement? It’s time for the home theater game, where your child will be a star and a leading actor. You also have to play the role of an enthusiastic audience, sending applause and presenting small gifts for good performance. However, everything should be real – the child’s costume, a few chairs to imitate the audience, and rehearsals of the show.
The good old tradition of learning poems or preparing small performances for family holidays will be helpful. For very shy kids, it is a perfect opportunity to recite a poem or present a little performance on behalf of the beloved fairy-tale character.
Train your power of observing
During a casual walk with your child, draw his/her attention to any unusual phenomena, remaining out of sight. This can be a bizarre cloud or just blossoming buds on a branch. You could not only draw the child’s attention to something new, but supplement it with a short story, in which the child can ask questions. It is important for you to not only play the role of an interesting storyteller, but also to stimulate the child’s curiosity.
It is not necessary to invent stories every single minute during your usual walking – your child should have plenty of time to learn new information and just relax. And if the child is making wrong assumptions, do not reproach him for being slow-witted – just force him/her gently and tactfully to move in the right direction.
Feel the measure and give portions of information
The younger the child, the less time should be devoted to informative sessions. 10-15 minutes are enough to make your child learn another batch of new information without getting tired. Even an adult finds it difficult to stay focused on any single object. Your child considers it even more difficult to sit still when there are so many new and interesting things around.
During the day, you can return to the subject under discussion, it will consolidate the effect of memorizing. Remember that your child should have time to understand the received information.
