New Century Children Are Expected to Live for a Century
A recent study reports that life expectancy is rising all over the world, and these days children born in the countries with a high level of civilization may well be expected to live to be a hundred! Researches conducted in Germany and Denmark reveal that in a number of countries life expectancy grew beyond scientists’ estimations.
The record-breaking country as regards life expectancy is Japan, and the study says that over 50 percent of Japanese women who have reached the age of 80 stand a good chance to live through the next decade.
David Gems, an aging expert at University College in London, says: “Improvements in health care is leading to ever slowing rates of aging, challenging the idea that there is a fixed ceiling to human longevity.”
David Gems is studying drugs that are effective in prolonging mice’s lives. He reports: “Laboratory studies of mice, including our own, demonstrate that if you slow aging even just a little, it has a strong protective effect. A pill that slowed aging could provide protection against the whole gamut of aging-related diseases.”
So medical developments will soon help elderly people cope with illnesses that besiege them as they grow older.
A strong counteracting factor, however, is the spread of obesity, obese individuals being more vulnerable and likely to succumb to various serious diseases.
