First Ectopic Baby Born
A rare case of ectopic pregnancy occurred in Tanzania, where a local resident successfully gave birth to a baby after the fetus had developed outside the uterus – in the abdomen. The baby was born completely healthy.
African doctors report a rare case of ectopic pregnancy, occurring in Tanzania. A 22-year-old pregnant girl stayed in hospital for 32 weeks, complaining of abdominal pain. She told the doctors that her stomach had stopped moving, and she herself had problems with urination. The woman had had routine checks, but they showed that pregnancy was proceeding normally.
The doctors then supposed that the expectant mother was the victim of anemia and some infections. However, the scans showed that the patient had ectopic pregnancy: her baby had been developing in the abdomen, where there was no amnion or protective amniotic fluid. The doctors think that the fertilized egg initially got secured in the fallopian tube, instead of the uterus, and then got into the abdominal cavity.
Despite the lack of amniotic fluid, the baby was alive and healthy. Doctors immediately conducted a surgery. As a result, a girl weighing 1.7 kg was born. Currently, she and the young mother feel good, they have already left hospital and stay at home. However, the mother underwent blood transfusion due to severe anemia.
As a rule, this kind of ectopic pregnancy is not detected by ultrasound. Unlike other types of ectopic pregnancy, in case of the baby’s development in the abdomen, there is a chance for a successful birth, but there is a considerable risk of the mother’s death because of the threat of internal bleeding.
