Fish in Pregnancy Diet – Healthy Baby
Fish-rich diet during pregnancy is linked to better physical and cognitive development of the infant. The study conducted by the Harvard University and Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen, Denmark, provides new evidence about the benefits of foods rich in fatty acid Omega-3 for the health of newborns. The study followed 25 thousand of children for five years. Weekly serving of fish in the pre-birth diet of pregnant women helped the women give birth to healthy and strong babies, who displayed fast development during the first 18 months of life.
Babies whose mothers ate a lot of fish dishes (approximately 60 grams per day) during the pregnancy period were more likely to develop better motor and cognitive skills, since mental and physical abilities of these kids grew by 25 per cent by the age of 6 months, and by 30 per cent by 18 months. Particularly great results were seen in children of those women who consumed salmon, cod, flounder, herring, and mackerel. Pediatricians remind us that breast milk also contains Omega-3, thus the longer the baby is breastfed, the faster he/she grows and is more protected from various diseases.
