Lead in Your Kitchen

A group of scientists from the New York University have examined the concentration of lead in a variety of household appliances. As the investigation organizers say, many of these items often come into the hands of small children. And a child’s body perceives the exposure to lead very negatively.

Thirty different things that each person uses in the household every day were selected for the study. According to the results of laboratory tests, the scientists concluded that lead concentration in twenty objects exceeded the permissible level of being not dangerous for health. In some kitchen appliances the concentration of this dangerous metal appeared to seven hundred times more the permissible level.

According to the International Health Regulations, the level of lead concentration that is non-hazardous to human health should be no more than six hundred parts per million. It turned out that the most dangerous to health is a metal salt shaker – its cap, in particular.

And especially hazardous ones are those salt shakers that have been used in household for a long time – the old ones, to put it simply. This is explained by the fact that these accessories were made at the time when the control over the danger of household goods was almost non-existent.

In this regard, antique sellers and flea markets should certainly have a special certificate which confirms that the kitchen utensils they sell are not of a threat to a human.
