The top list is based on the data from 178 countries. The experts compared the performance of the countries in five categories:

  • financial well-being of citizens,
  • level of education of local residents,
  • social and political status of women,
  • maternal health,
  • and the infant mortality rate.

Curiously, Finland was not included in the top three in any of the parameters. It has won due to its average result – the state was among the fifteen best countries in each category.

Denmark, Iceland, the Netherlands and Sweden happened to be among the most suitable states for childhood and motherhood. They took the second through fifth lines of the rating compiled by the independent organization, while the last 178th place was given to Somalia (according to statistics, one in seven children dies before five years in this southern African nation because of the appalling living conditions.

The situation is the worst for the women and children, who are forced to live in the countries involved in armed conflicts or natural disasters. They suffer from this influence most of all and face the risk of premature death 14 times more often, as the researchers note.
