A Woman’s Brain Grows After Giving Birth

After giving birth, the female brain starts to increase in size whatever the story about its reduction. In fact, the grey matter of the brain begins to grow in volume shortly after a woman gives birth.

The study published by the American Psychological Association shows that women’s brain after childbirth begins to grow in size as the women have so much to learn after giving birth.

Curiously, mothers who gushed most about their newborns tended to experience the biggest amounts of growth in key regions of the brain. Researchers from the National Institute of Mental Health in Maryland scanned the brains of 19 women who gave birth to 10 boys and 9 girls.

Comparison of images taken after two to four weeks of birth and three to four months after the birth of babies showed the amount of grey matter increased by a small but significant amount in different parts of the brain.

It is known that the volume of an adult’s grey matter in the brain cannot change considerably within a few months unless under intense periods of learning, a brain injury, illness or become a victim of any significant changes in the external environment. The researchers suggested that hormone levels and the need to cope with new circumstances after birth might lead to an increase in brain cells in females.

These studies were published in the Behavioural Neuroscience journal.
