Homeschooling: A Trick for Helping Your Kid with Performing Boring Tasks Faster

Quite often your kid will receive a task from her teacher to, let’s say, do the same kind of exercises multiple times, but with different numbers. BORING! And when you’re homeschooling your kid it’s even worse. If there’s no motivation, nothing will be done quickly. Sitting over one single sheet with exercises could last like 2 hours. As a result, you’re mad and your child is desperate. Stop it! And learn to avoid it.

Motivate and teach to self-motivate

The easiest thing here is to support. It’s so simple that we often forget this obvious tip. Tell your child they can do it, it’s so easy for them and so on. If you can’t be near your kid and support all the time, write a small note with motivational words, such as

  • “You can do it”
  • “I believe in you”
  • “Nothing is impossible”
  • “We love you”

Just any motivational phrase that could make your child feel a bit better.

Another option is to teach your kid to tell themselves:

“I can do it”

“I’m smart and I’m going to do this easily now”

Or some other phrases that could motivate him/her.

Take a break

If that’s the case, and there’s a task she could do in just 15 to 20 minutes but in reality it takes much longer this time, first thing you should do is stop. Let her take a short break. During this break let your child do either some physical exercises, for example, jump on a trampoline, or eat something healthy like an apple or a piece of dark chocolate or do something that makes her feel good like playing Lego or just walk in the fresh air for 10 minutes. After the break let her try again on the tasks. It could be much easier.

Let them do simple things first

It could be the simplest tasks of the sheet or the easiest subject (for your kid). Let your kid decide. It will give her a sense of control (she may choose) and at the same time getting things done easily makes people feel better. They get dopamine and are thus ready for more complicated tasks.

Don’t start the day with school tasks

If this problem appears quite often, change the whole system of homeschooling. Let them do other things first. If your son or daughter is good at something, let them start with it. It will give them more dopamine that inspires to performing further tasks faster and with more motivation.

Here’s an example. Your son is a good ping-pong player and really enjoys it. You’re not a good player, but you go playing with him. He wins a couple of times and it gives him a shot of dopamine.

Now he’s ready to start with school tasks. Believe me, it will take less this time! Because there’s something positive he already had today.

Stick to a schedule

The most obvious tip is to have a schedule. This means, even at homeschooling times go to bed early and wake up at the same time. Make sure your kid gets enough rest at night and follows a healthy diet. Just like the first recommendation, don’t forget about it. We all know it, but neglect it so often and let kids go to bed at midnight, after which he or she feels worse during the day and spends much more time on school tasks.

Good luck and we hope these tips will help you and your kids during these tricky homeschooling times.
