Infant Cry Classification

Spanish scientists from the University of Valencia have developed a classification of infant cry. In order to understand its cause, one has to look at the face of the baby.

Crying Baby

Crying When Showing Negative Emotions

According to the author of the study, Dr. Mariano Choliz, baby’s crying is the only way to express negative emotions, and depending on the facial expression of the infant, as well as the intensity of its crying, you can define the possible cause.

Infant Crying with Open Eyes

If a baby is crying with eyes open, it means that it is either angry or afraid. And if it closes its eyes while crying, it means that the infant feels pain.

The Sound of Infant’s Cry

In addition, it is necessary to follow the dynamics of the sound of crying. Angry babies cry bitterly, but then the crying becomes less loud and gradually fades away. On the contrary, if the baby feels hurt, or is afraid, its crying will last for a pretty long time, and it will gradually increase.

How Do Mothers Understand Their Child?

The classification is based on the observations of 20 infants in the age group from 3 to 18 months. The scientists have observed the reaction of their parents and found that mothers have a better understanding of the infant’s crying when it happens because of pain rather than for any other reason.
